Argan Cooperatives and Sustainable Development
Zoubida Charrouf, a Moroccan professor at Mohamed V University in Rabat, is internationally known for her work on the argan tree. She considers the argan tree a vital national resource and believes that protecting it is essential for sustainable development.
Charrouf became interested in the argan tree while studying in France. She discovered that the tree had not been seriously studied for decades. Her research showed that argan oil contains important nutrients.
She helped establish cooperatives near Essaouira. These cooperatives provided women with income and recognition. At first, some men opposed the idea, but attitudes changed when women supported their families.
Charrouf believes higher demand for argan oil can encourage reforestation. The argan tree supports rural communities and protects the environment.
